we, being many, are one body …and it’s complicated September 10, 2015

Sometimes in the church and in Christian organisations it feels as if we people are pulling in opposite directions …and that can be okay. The body is complex. The trick is not to get all your muscles pulling in the same direction but to get them working together.

Let me illustrate from scripture….

1123 Muscles of the Leg that Move the Foot and Toes

“If the Tibialis anterior says, ‘I am not a part of the leg because I am not a fibularis longus,’ that does not make it any less a part of the leg”
Rom 12.15 New Anatomical Version.

You may prefer to read the passage in another version. Here’s 1 Corinthians 12 in the New Living Translation and again on a different site in the NIV.

Again in Romans 12 Paul says:
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. ” Romans 12:3-5 ESV

I’m glad to be part of a local church where we don’t think and act the same way.

I’m also glad to be part of a global church where some of those differences are even more visible. It’s not always easy when we are so very many, but we are one in Christ!
